It's hard to imagine even The Atlantic being this stupid. Collegiate athletics were originally never "separated by sex". In elementary and sometimes jr high schools girls would routinely play with boys in the non-contact sports. The older they got the less common it was because as the boys got tougher and more aggressive, the girls could no longer compete. They couldn't make it on the HS and College teams. Women demanded female sports so girls could compete with other girls at their own level.
