Forces of 9,000 vs 2,000. The Dahomey inflicted 700 casualties, the French killed and wounded approximately 6,000. The greatest victory the Dahomey had was burning their own capital down (The French flag still flew over the palace)
In both wars altogether the French suffered only 100 dead (with just 16 in the first war), including their civilian black porters, including the dead from disease.
Yeah, a better way to say it was "France suffered 700 casualties", considering almost half was just because the water pipes weren't done being set up. I couldn't imagine something more humiliating than some dudes in big hats and gloves and nice boots walking into the contenent you've been on for three thousand or so years, saying "Seems nice, but kind of a shit hole" and then in the span of a few years completely teraforming it to where huge industry, unbreakable bridges, and pipes with clean flowing miles from the rivers your women have been walking to and from going up in the span of a few months. How do you come back from that massive disparity in power and competence, I feel humble when a plumber fixes my dripping faucet, let alone if he built the entire damn water pump in my face.
