When you actually read real comments on real (dedicated) websites for fanart or fanfiction, the comments are almost always supportive. Even from haters. "I don't normally like this pairing, but you're doing well with it" kind of thing. It's actually an almost culty love-bomby level of positivity in a lot of them.
It takes social media to turn it into a hatefest. Twitter, facebook, tumblr when it was around, reddit, these types of sites which don't have the community, which don't heavily feature creators who know the hardships of creating, they're the ones who always are first to hate.
