I don't think you're reading that the way it was intended. Washington Examiner has a very right wing slant, and I think that phrase was intended to describe the woman's bravery in the face of several thugs.

I mean, the headline "Chicago would-be robber dies after woman stands her ground and shoots him" doesn't sound like it's trying to elicit sympathy for the robber.
