What a coincidence, I just watched it last night. I'd say that I also generally enjoyed it. Chris Evans was definitely hamming it up in his role, but I didn't mind it so much because the character was written to be kind of unbelievably assholish anyway. The ham kind of fit. Gosling played almost the exact same character he's played in every action movie, but I do enjoy him in that kind of role.
There's definitely the one super capable woman character, but she is the only one. And to be fair she does get beat in her final fight scene, only surviving because her male opponent lets her off the hook (though that doesn't excuse her first fight scene where she handily defeats several men bigger than her, and also doesn't excuse the frankly insane accuracy with a grenade launcher and RPG while under fire running in full sprint). So...one point against uber-capable and like 10 in the other direction. The only other two female characters (besides the kid) I can think of weren't shown to be good at fighting, though they were shown to be good at blowing themselves up and shooting already defeated and exhausted men.
I actually didn’t mind Chris evans, or even the Bollywood dudes like obvious “no villainy” clause in his contract. What I couldn’t accept was the jarringly bad editing and fast forwarding in 90% of the hand-to-hand fight scenes. Is it western studios or just western actors that are incapable of fun fight choreography!?
ana de armas has been pretty outspoken against superfemme SJW bullshit in spy movies because of the backlash against 007. she barely wins the bangkok fight, quite bloodied and that's where it ends. she does some mediocre driving after that. she gets her ass handed to her in the hospital by an assassin. she mocks 6 a few times, but it's all situational from shit he actually did, not because "she's a woman and he's a [stupid] man". in the castle siege, she runs a shitload, and then kneels down tired like a normal person does after sprinting so much. she has 2 good shots and one mediocre shot with an RPG, but anyone with substantial CIA field training should do fine. nothing about her is mary sue.
the old black lady CIA agent is just a paper pusher the entire movie til she blows up.
the girl at the CIA with the shot-caller villain is whining the whole time about how they're going to prison for this shit. she gets a free shot, and then shows off she's just as power-hungry and villainous as him.
but most of all, the movie is about a principled, noble kid who went to prison for shooting his own dirtbag father, after his father was attempting to murder the kid's brother. the CIA picks him out for his crime of justified violence, and trains him to be an assassin. he refuses to murder innocent collateral, and follows through to the end to save the niece of the man who saved his own life. it's traditional, principled, strong masculinity exhibited by multiple men who utilize that motivation to stop bad men.
so on a scale beef jerky, hunting, and lumberjacks all the way to marxist pedophilia, this is not even close to woke. it reminded me a lot of the tom cruise action movies. all action, just enough storyline to have some motivations, but nothing heavy, and not really any political message.
