The thing is, they're panicked because they feel like they're losing control.
They're losing control and they know what they would do if the situations were reversed.
Corollary: These people will be able to psych themselves up to do some terrible things in what they feel to be the defence of their privileges, because frankly, they would happily march you to the gulag and so for them, making sure you don't get to do that to them justifies any action at all.
