the FAA has largely outsourced most operations and those still in the actual org are just random hires from whatever areas.
They've been doing that everywhere, then. I remember family complaining about all the outsourcing the military was doing in the 00s. That shit forced my dad into an early retirement.
The general gist as I remember was "Good news! We're finally giving you your own ship! Whoops sorry the entire thing your current post and your command/crew-to-be does is getting outsourced so we won't be needing your services anymore."
What's hilarious is whatever company took on those roles hired him on to do the same shit he was doing immediately prior to the announcement he'd be captaining a ship. Basically he took off his officer's uniform one day and just walked into the same office and everything. Just, in civilian clothes.
I guess the outsourcing saved Uncle Sam money but I don't really understand how.
There's also a lot fewer military vet pilots now, with nearly all the Vietnam-era boomers having retired.
