The only way you wouldn't be the father you are today without aborting your first child is you absolutely fucked up and got a girl pregnant while dirt poor in or before college, and neither your nor your girlfriend's parents gave a fuck about supporting that infant.
I feel like everyone forgets grandparents exist.
ON TOP OF THAT... I've seen a LOT of young people be complete useless drunken morons until someone gets pregnant (that idiocy is usually what causes the pregnancy), and had that event be their wake up call to actually get their shit together.
All throughout the my youth I was told teen pregnancy was the worst thing ever. I was told it was the end of your fucking life and that if it happened, you were a rock bottom failure for sure.
Then I became aware of all people with parents less than 20 years older than themselves. Then throughout school and college I saw a bunch of classmates get pregnant.
I googled those girls, and their boyfriends. Guess what? They're fine. Half of them are better off than I am, probably because they had their shit nailed down at 20 where as I was fucking around like a brainless retard til 26, because I could.
I think for a lot of people, having a child is what truly transitions them to adulthood, and there's probably a bunch of biological changes that occur within the brains of parents to make them more responsible and forward-planning. There was no doubt a very good reason why our ancestors used to get married young and start having kids early, and it wasn't just that their life expectancy was shorter. I think a lot of us are living this extended, aimless adolescence these days, and I say that as someone who is nearly 30 with no kids yet.
34 here. Thankfully married and working on the family bit... but I just wanted to say "extended, aimless adolesence" is a perfect description.
Good luck my friend! I'm planning on getting married soon too. I want to be young enough that I can deal with my kids when they're teenagers and not have to put up with that in my 50s.
