Why are they so invested in this case? All they're doing is making themselves look more and more deranged, defending an obvious abuser. Is there some special reason they can't just stop shooting themselves in the foot?

NPCs literally are programmed. Repeat the mantra enough times and it replaces any other thoughts they have. Logic and reason don't matter. Keep repeating the mantra.
