What we largely saw during the "summer of love" was that the police were often ordered to ignore them up until they started trying to burn down a federal courthouse, the media applauded them or outright suggested more targets for destruction, and on the off chance they actually managed to get arrested, they would get their bail paid by some leftist organization and it's not unlikely the DA would decline to prosecute. If the right enjoyed that level of support, maybe they'd be on the streets, too. But I agree that the essentially mainstream belief on the left that "Everyone who doesn't agree with you is a nazi and violence against nazis is justified" is also a factor in mobilizing them.
