Cause the ACLU is basically dedicated to destroying anything to do with "the patriarchy", "white supremacy", "the alt-right" and pretty much every other buzzword.

Part of the monetary settlement that Depp was to pay Heard was to go to the ACLU, per Heard's explicit demand.

That's why the ACLU is intertwined in the defamation suit.
