I think Sega has been pretty smart with the way it handles it's older games. Anybody that cared about the original versions of Sonic already has roms of these games that they either dumped from their own cart or more likely just downloaded from somewhere.
How Sega has gotten around the rampant piracy is offering a good value and a convenient front end to play their games. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection was like $20 for 48 really good genesis games, with a decent front end and no setup.
On the other hand, you have Nintendo who wanted to charge you $8 to play the original Super Mario Bros, a game literally everyone owns and can be emulated on a Windows 98 PC.
I'm not sure this perfectly applies since I presume if you already owned these you could still download and use the old versions, but this type stuff is why I insist on buying PC stuff on GOG when available, because I can and do download and archive the offline installers. Maybe it's a little crazy, but just last year I replayed a game I bought 25 years ago because I still had it. Yeah, sure I could have bought it again or pirated it, but I just like the concept of I had it all this time and it's mine. I don't like digital ownership really. I just got rid of my PS4 and essentially abandoned everything I had on there. Not that it was much because I never really enjoyed that system, but it's the same with my Xbox One that I have a zillion games on.
Pretty much. I forget about cartridge based stuff just from being a PC kid mainly. Not that I preferred that at the time, but I went through last year and backed up all my old CDs mainly like I'd done with floppies in years past. Nice to have that option
I wholeheartedly disagree.
Yes, this is bad for games preservation. Look at Rockstar delisting the original versions of the 3D era GTA games only to start reselling them on their site due to the GTA definitive disaster.
But on the other hand, if you wanted to play the original versions, why not emulate them?
Sonic Origins is just an alternate version of Sonic The Hedgehog 1, 2 CD and 3 & Knuckles. The original versions were ripped to rom files by many an emulation enthusiast, so why NOT emulate? I'm doing this policy with games like the Armored Core franchise up to Last Raven and Ace Combat up to Zero, so I'd like to ask YOU, LaptopWillEatThisAcc, a question:
If you're so bummed that these versions will be delisted, why are you ranting about it and not realising that you can just download an emulator and a rom and emulate them?
I tend to go about piracy and such the same way. When I was a kid I copied all kinds of stuff, but I'm an adult who's done pretty well and it feels crummy to steal things for my entertainment. Albeit when something is not made available in a reasonable fashion I generally consider all bets are off at that point.
But I think to your point and mine, the principle of it bugs me. Albeit what bugs me more than delisting is censoring existing content people have already purchased after-the-fact.
Just download the genesis roms an emulate them like everyone else has been doing for 20+ years at this point.

also oops, old eshops are shut down, you'll just have to rebuy the same games on our new shop 5 years later

If you care about this, knuckles is 5 deep in your mom.
