Background: Years ago, there was a game called "13 Sentinels". I've never played it, and I never will, because the localisers sabotaged its release by cramming the translation with Identity Politics. One of the most destructive ideologies you could ever push, and they decided to use the game's translation to push crap like "non-binary". The end result was a public stormout by gamers worldwide, and more lols amongst sane Gamergaters.
Flash forward to 2022, and the company behind 13 Sentinels decide to port it to the Nintendo Switch. But how can you make it a surefire seller? Simple. The company said that the script would be rewritten to get rid of the malicious Idpol mistranslation. Then the port came out, and it turns out THEY LIED! The characters still brag about being troons as they didn't bother with their promise!
Needless to say, I think you should stay away from 13 Sentinels. They don't care, they outright decieved, so why should YOU care? If you keep on speaking out angrily rather than silently making fun of it and not bothering, you'll just end up causing these clowns to double down and cause further deceit.
P.S. Nice to see my old Reddit haunt KotakuInAction2 reborn as a standalone site. You guys rock.
Out of curiosity, can you think of anything horrible regarding NIS and XSeed? I remember NIS censoring some sex stuff in one of those really close to hentai games I think but that's all I can think of. Falcom is one of the few devs I like their new things coming out enough to buy before they are too old and generally comes through one of those two localizers. Although I have wanted to try a Vanillaware game after hearing how amazing they are, albeit most likely would be getting my hands on a used disc of Odin Sphere or Dragon's Crown for PS3.
Playing CS4 now, and I'm glad it has a lot has Japanese audio, because it lets me glimpse into how extreme the localization is. Some of it is whatever, a lot of making up entire conversations out of simple routine Japanese responses, but I guess they don't like the redundancy of conversational Japanese. Sounds like you know Japanese, so I'm not telling you anything new.
I wish I could read Japanese better, as I can only imagine what is going on with most of the text, but I just don't have the drive to learn to read Japanese beyond my basic level. Even if I knew all the Kanji, I don't think I'd ever be fast, which would make a JRPG miserable to play.
Sounds like they all suck then. I'm still way back at the beginning of the Trails series in games that were translated a decade ago. Will see what I do when I catch up to Zero. Played about half the Ys games, but totally scattered anywhere from Ys I to IX. I think IX being the only NIS one, but I'm only a few hours in it. Funny though you mention NIS and memes, they've probably been doing too much Disgaea, which I think is at least intended to have bad humor. In the end though, I guess it's a rock and a hard place because the choices are learn Japanese or quit all new games entirely, because when it comes down to it I think my interest in Western games hovers around 0.001% of new releases now.
"Stop giving 99% of localisers money, period."
OW THE BIAS~
Seriously, I do NOT need "localiser bad" virtue signallers like you in my timeframe.
I have to assume he was being sarcastic.
I hope.
Oxymoron. No localizer is worth anything, not even the bullet it takes to remove that trash from existence.
Translate, don't localize. I will not only die on this hill, I will dig a fucking trench line and set up mortars and machine guns atop it.
Fromsoftware, dummy.
Yes, they localise their games themselves. Ever since Demon's Souls, they've been getting better and better at it.
SEGA's work on the Yakuza meta-series also deserves a mention. In fact, for a while, with the exception of Binary Domain, the games lacked English voice acting, creating a Metro/STALKER-esque immersion that helped put you into the dark, dramatic, yet playful universe.
Unfortunately, in these dangerous times, it's either the devil you know (official translations) or the devil you don't (fan translations). I'm fully aware of Atlus USA's idiocy, but I should consider myself lucky as the only games I'm planning to buy from them are the remaster of Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne and Tesla Effect (the most recent Tex Murphy adventure). I apologise If I was a moron. I'm just a firm believer that it's either the devil you know or the devil you don't.
I was semi-interested in that game since I'm downsizing and getting rid a lot of my gaming stuff and getting a Switch. The fact they lied and how they went about that translation will keep it off my want list. I'm not often nearly as outraged as most here when a cover art is changed for a western release to reduce the visibility of the tits by 2mm. This on the other hand, intentionally putting in political values and lunacy like using the word "binaries" in this context is a no-go for me.
I'm willing to bet these ass hats have said binary so often they don't even know what it even means anymore.
