This isn't news. Maybe it's proof (I haven't checked the link) but everyone knew Hussein was backing Al Qaeda back in 2011/2012 when he saw a chance to take out Syria's secular dictator. He always was quite cozy with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Syria's secular dictator.

I wouldn't call him secular based on our standards. But comparing him to ISIS, then probably one could use "secular".
