That's what all of the post-Warsaw pact NATO expansion has been about. It is about keeping Europe and Russia suspicious of one another, because the US knows that these two peoples - ultimately the two halves of the Roman Empire - would have relatively little to seriously fight about now that communism is out Russia.
They know that a Europe aligned with Russia is a Europe that doesn't need the US, and so Europe and Russia must be baited into distrusting eachother.
I'm an atheist, and yet I hope the murderers of Tsar Nicholas are in hell.
Europe's history has been mired with wars. And these countries, former Warsaw pact countries, almost all of them HATES Russia to their very core. For what they did to them when they were still under USSR rule. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see why they joined NATO as soon as they could.
