Poppy sap is used to produce opium, not the seeds.

The sap is collected by scoring the head of the poppy and allowing the plant to produce latex from the wound. The inside of the seed pod is hollow and does not contain any liquid. The seeds are collected and sold separately as food after the head has matured and dried.
