+1 for Mushoku Tensei, though be prepared to be put on an fbi watchlist. They could have kept the themes and characters intact while dialing back the pedo fanservice imo.

I'll add Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood to the pile. A perfect mix of scifi, alt history, action, political intrigue, drama, and comedy.

As for recent stuff, I recommend 86. It's a really well done exploration of characters navigating an impossible situation.
