As revealed by the Americans (who got everything right so far), they have lists of people to kill or arrest in their "denazfication". They can't let them just escape like that.
Many interior ministry prisoner transport vehicles (avtozaks) were seen prepared on the borders, marked with invasion marks.
IIRC the Americans didn't get everything right so far, Biden said Russia was going to invade last Wednesday. I've seen someone claim that him claiming so postponed the invasion for a week, but that smells like a massive dose of copium.
Anyway, there are a shitload of people fleeing west based on some of the photos and videos I've seen - it's at least in the tens of thousands, just from Kiev, just from the few available pics. Traffic jams as far as the eye can see. I doubt the Russian list has more than a couple dozen names on it, and it's unlikely to be random Ukrainians - and I doubt Russians are just going to start striking the civilian columns.
Hate being right sometimes (left more often).
Airborne forces concentrated in the westernmost Belarus are going to cut off the border by air and land.
Belarusian mechanized forces already joined in actively in the Kiev axis btw.
Why would Russians try to stop Ukrainians from fleeing and potentially overwhelming several NATO countries with refugees?
