I think the whole "flat earth" thing was pushed by spooks as a way of discrediting the whole "conspiracy theory" group.
So called conspiracy theorists have been right about so many things over the last decade or so, and even more so lately with all the COVID bullshit narrative crumbling and it seems like every day/week there's some new information coming to light proving the conspiracy theorists right yet again.
A lot of people will believe things just because they are told that it's true by people that they trust. They can't/won't critically analyse the data/information to come to their own conclusion, they will just follow the conclusions of people they trust.
No doubt there are some/many on our side of the fence who are similarly followers that caught wind of some truth that turned them to our side and who are also uncritically following the people/groups on our metaphorical side of the fence.
Some of those people (a subset of a subset) may even find themselves believing all "conspiracy theories" and end up believing the flat earther "conspiracy theorists".
I've met a few actual flat earthers in real life and for every one of them, that's the path that got them to believing the earth was flat. They discovered that some conspiracy theories actually turned out to be true, so they moved from laughing at and deriding conspiracy theories to believing that all conspiracy theories are true.
It helps keep the normies in line when you can point over the political fence and say "don't look over there, they have people that believe the earth is flat, nothing they say is credible, laugh at those silly people.". That does a really good job of keeping some normies from even glancing over the political fence.
But then again, maybe I've gone too far down the conspiracy rabbit hole and maybe intelligence agencies aren't actually running psy-ops on an unsuspecting global public in order to push a not-so-secret agenda as a cog in a greater plan for world domination by a corrupt elite.
