So as we all have seen that the Amazon LOTR based show will go down the usual representation route which wasn't a surprise. I have to admit I foolishly thought they would respect Tolkein's legacy when I first heard of this project but that was foolish. Also when they fired the lore expert that was a major red flag.
I am getting sick and tired of entertainment saying the whole "reflect the modern world" or "reflect modern society" BS. LOTR has always been for anyone who wanted to read it, and it has been translated into many languages. I remember someone once got mad at me for saying that if you need to see yourself represented in everything, then you have a problem because you can go online and look up anything or read a book on a famous female, black, Asian, latino, etc. scientist, doctor, or whatever if that is so important to you. Why shows have to cater to these morons is beyond me.
Of course Wheel of Time suffers from the same problem. In the books they meet people of different races once they go out into the larger world and women in power are all over the books but that isn't enough.
As for lgbt stuff, I have said for years... get your own channel and write your own stories if you insist that lgbt content needs to be in everything. I remember Nerdrotic responded to someone who said that not everything has to have straight people, and he said that is true but not everything needs to have gay people and in a larger point not everything has to have everything in it.
Honestly I wish they would just stop crapping on source material of much better writers than they could ever be. They should start adapting the garbage that wins the Hugo and Nebula awards.
Sorry for the rant, just so tired of it, but thankfully I have mountains of books. They can't take those away.
I expected them to do this and I have to say, it’s still disappointing to see. I look forward to the crash and burn.
We do still have the books, and Jackson made a great set of films too.
I sometimes go back and forth between evil and incompetence… I genuinely think this is a case of incompetence rather than purposeful maliciousness.
I notice it is heavily pushed by women, who seem to be out of their depth in really understanding these issues and how to fix them.
According to the video I saw of one of their “lore scholars”, they picked a diversity obsessed woman who is not familiar with the story at all.
I always said about the Witcher, that if they wanted to include blacks, they could have just used the Zerrikanians, who were described as living in a hot desert area.
Sorry, but it’s never going to make sense to have blacks in a snowy environment unless your story is metropolitan, or they are foreigners.
The same thing is true of LOTR. If you are intelligent and really had a desire to be inclusive, you could have done it without butchering what already exists.
These people think they are doing some kind of service to humanity by randomly allocating black and brown people to the scenes, whether it makes sense or not.
You want me to believe that in a village in this frozen, ancient place where there are no planes or cars, people of completely different races have existed together? For how long? Wouldn’t they eventually be brown from mixing together? How did they get to be there in the first place? Is there no explanation for why they look different?
We’re just supposed to pretend that it’s normal to have a “diverse” group? It would be like a city where elves, dwarves, and humans were all mixed together, and you just never say why. Is it a trading hub between their respective civilizations?
The funny thing is I guarantee you they will have distinct human cities, dwarven cities, and elven cities without skipping a beat. But why would that be the case? Shouldn’t they all have mixed cities? They wouldn’t even see the contradiction. Their rebellion is against logic. Too bad they are dragging down the rest of us with them…
"A McDonald's in every city is culturally homogenizing. Every city having the exact same mix of exotic/foreign restaurants is not, somehow."
Affirmative Blacktion
Completely agree. But we can’t even make these points without being called racist. But you are right.
