You know what I just realized? Serf or peasant is basically a nicer word for slave.
You didn’t own the land, the king did. You would be subject to a local lord and work land that you didn’t own, by force, because you couldn’t exactly leave or refuse since you were tied to the land. You didn’t know how to read or write because you weren’t educated, etc.
People make slavery sound so bad, but I don’t see a distinction. With greater technology, people could produce excess food and then become merchants or specialize in other things. Then once we could mass produce books, learning became more feasible.
Now with technology as it is, slavery is pretty useless. That’s actually a nice story of overcoming.
