This post is my attempt at explaining the reason why a ton of woke garbage exists seemingly independently of logic.
Let's start by ways a woke property can still make money, excluding not being garbage.
Brand recognition : The No Time to Die/Star Wars method. It works once, maybe twice, then people get wise to it and give up on the franchise.
Outside funding : This mainly applies to state-funded media like the BBC and NPR. These are the untouchables who can't be held accountable because they're effectively part of the government. They could have one viewer in the whole country and still remain funded.
Brand deals : The Epic Games method. Dump your garbage on their store and swim in Fortnite money. I'm sure other companies do it too, but I'm most familiar with the EGS model.
Donations : Only really works for small indie projects. These effectively just fleece idiots out of their not-so-hard-earned money.
Finally, and the topic of this post : Streaming Platforms/Subscriptions.
I'm talking about the likes of Xbox Game Pass, Netflix, Prime Video etc, not in-game subscriptions or DLCs.
So, let's go into what these platforms offer, because no matter which one, the reasoning is always the same.
There are hundreds/thousands of titles promised, with no promise of quality but the customer's assumption because of the size of the company.
There is the promise of fully-funded original content, exclusive to the platform.
There's an attractively priced monthly fee, with an introductory discount or free trial.
So, what makes people take the jump? Usually, only a specific title or titles. For example, Netflix enjoyed a jump in subscribers after Squid Game. Sometimes it's not even for an original show. The Office used to be the most popular show on Netflix at one point.
These people join with their brain in the mind of "I will cancel when I'm done with this one thing". It's similar to gym memberships, which get a spike around New Year's and most people forget to cancel. But it's not just forgetfulness that they take advantage of.
The human brain is wired in a way where if you have something for a while, you start to make excuses to keep it, even if you don't want it, because letting go of something you already have is harder than not getting it in the first place. It's similar to taking an unwanted toy from a child. They never wanted it, but now they do. They fear losing it.
With this psychological inclination, these services have a lot of captive subscribers who will only leave when something angers or disappoints them enough to override this tendency.
Now I've explained how they work, it's time to explain how the woke use it to hide their failures.
Picture this, you are a woke, feminist director and you have a pile of steaming propaganda that Goebbels would be proud of. Nobody would go to see it willingly, so you sell it to the streaming services for a slight profit over what it cost you to make.
"But Impossible, nobody will watch it still, why would they pay?"
Simple. They already know that most subscribers will never watch 99% of the shows available and that a vast majority are shit. However, the larger the number of shows available, the better the deal looks for the new customers - and that's who their real target is, people who will just see a larger number in the ads and be pushed off the fence towards taking a free trial.
TL;DR : Streaming services are basically a slush fund for the producers of unwatchable garbage in the name of higher headline figures of available content to advertise.
How can genuine success compete with that?
The mirage of choice: I can buy inet service at 200Mbps for $80 a month or 10Mbps at $60 a month.
