I also support the author if they're worthy - buying many books I haven't even cracked open - but for books that I'm really not sure about yet, or where the author is no longer alive, or super overpriced textbooks on basic knowledge I do like to have an alternative source. 🏴☠️
It's also worth it to have backups of all your ebooks in case Amazon goes 1984 again and starts removing things.
The removal of digital copies is a main reason I prefer owning physical ones. For example, Amazon banned the pdf here as well as Cowan’s book “Contagion Myth”
