The doomers get to apocalypse prep but be justified instead of appearing "fringe crazy" , the extreme left get to "warmonger" for real instead of armchair general, and the NPCs get their drama fixes to boost feel good dopamine/adrenaline alternatingly.

Eventually the dopamine/adrenaline hits will wear off, they'll beg for a return to the easy life and become wagecagies who will gladly eat the bugs.
