What they are saying is that people who retreat from the political process because they no longer trust in the integrity of the system are not defeated - they are disenfranchised. And the more disenfranchised a population becomes, the more likely escalation into open conflict becomes. When the numbers reach critical mass, violence is all but certain.

We are on the road to war, and people withdrawing from political solutions is a major milestone. Anyone who celebrates this is an idiot or a monster.
