Something I remember spectemur (if anyone else remembers him) saying on Half years ago was "humans are animals, and if allowed to do so we will act like animals". I don't remember if he also said this, but if not heavily implied was "it's only civilization and social norms that prevent us from acting like animals".
Always stuck with me, even then when I didn't agree with him nearly as much.
