On the other hand, before the Poles there were Germans. And before that, as far as I can tell, it was disputed territory between several Indian tribes. The Poles themselves were filthy Catholics invading a nice Protestant town. 50 years is a long time over there in the US.
Not so much "disputed", as neutral, as the area on both sides of the river was pretty swampy when the French first settled the area. And my own grandmother described how Windsor's Giles Blvd E was just a creek when her family first moved there in the 1920s. The remnant of the Caroligian swamp it originally was can be seen at Point Pelee.
Hamtramck used to be known as Poletown. As in, all Polish. The home of "punchkies" on Fat Tuesday.
