Limiting access to guns doesn't change how many guns are in the hands of criminals

However, the US is so awash with guns that limiting access to any meaningful degree would take 10+ years at least.

Violent crime drops with stop and frisk, which is catching people after they have illegally purchased a weapon.

Anyone can purchase a kitchen knife, and being caught with one isn't going to prevent them from purchasing another.

Simply making people think twice about carrying a knife on the street reduces violent crime.
