Yes, I cringed saying that as well, but not all consensuses (that's the plural, right) are created equal. Intelligence researchers are serious people who don't go around falsifying data, which is why the 'social scientists' are often so mad at them.
A dumb female can still marry a sucker and live a normal life, while a dumb male will likely end up homeless or in prison.
Right now? I'd say the past would be more relevant. It's not a bad argument to explain a mechanism, but as far as I know, the data does shows that there are more male idiots than female idiots. There may be a prosaic explanation for it, more variation that creates more of the good as well as more of the bad.
But the bell curve that you posted did not take that into account at all. It was just shifted a few points to the right for men.
