I'm starting to think, part of the reason some transition or have surgery might be a result of depression. Like suicide, self-harm, maybe partially, transitioning is another side effect of it.

It is almost invariably people who feel (for reasons of highly variable legitimacy) that they are 'failing' or will 'fail' as their biological sex.
That could be a man who doesn't feel he's tall enough, strong enough, or endowed and virile enough, or can't bare the pressure of the expectation to go out and make enough money to feed a family.
It could be a woman who doesn't feel she's attractive enough, finds her treatment by men patronizing, is fearful of pregnancy, can't stand the idea of being a babysitter for 18 years... Literally any reason people can think of to hate the hand that life dealt them could push them to percieve greener pastures in the life of the opposite sex.
