American politics isn't all that different than much of the rest of the world that has "elections." We get to choose between the guy that will screw some things up and the guy who will screw some things up faster and more aggressively.

Being that such a system seems to not work anywhere, I'm really not even sure what I'd suggest as an alternative. Perhaps a benevolent dictator?
