Criticism where it's due, I never understood people who go to hot-zones voluntarily and aren't there for a purpose, i.e. mercs, doctors, war reporters etc.
Credit where it's due though, he's been resourceful getting there, staying alive, keeping a cool head for the most part, and it appears he's linked up with some people that can keep him safe. Still kind of an idiot that other people now have to look after, but I think he'll be alright.
Crisis tourism. A way to offset the ennui that goes along with that kind of privilege, of living such a pampered life that all of your needs are met. Same reason rich kids have always been attracted to NGOs and international "charities" or religious missions to third-world countries. It's not just about helping, or making yourself look good. It's a way to feel like you're actually alive.
I suppose that's like looking for the action, adventure and testing your limits that would normally come from something like military service with all the risk, but not the responsibility of potentially taking a life.
