I think it's worse than 'can't see', it's refusal to see.

Refusal to see that the gradual weakening of the west is setting the stage for the next global power struggle to begin. Refusal to see that The Long Peace is likely nearing its end, and that war with a major power is looking increasingly likely.

It's not too surprising that comfortable, apathetic first worlders would refuse to acknowledge that they're staring a potential nuclear war in the face.
