What I miss about comic books and violent movies from the past, characters like this would be shot dead amid the battle so the audience would cheer. In the shit meant for kids, the character would end up tossed out on their ass ala Brainy Smurf "Papa Smurf...". It was a cheap 'shot', but worked to change the tone from to more upbeat.
