Nothing truly reflects actual worth (except scrap value), but markets are usually a pretty good indicator.

Would you agree that the value was artificially lowered? Secondly, would you agree that there's a reason for this, namely one that they knew and could exploit for dehumanizing purposes?

It's not surprising. Psychological abuse victims taking their revenge on those who wronged them.
