If you haven’t listened to the Greek mythology retellings done by Stephen Fry you are doing yourself a disservice. They are leagues better than any current tv series. However in the book Heroes he touches on a very poignant truth. The heroes of Greek mythology never knew rest, their lives were constantly embattled and often ended poorly, but they brought about great change. This was their standard of man, to bring about the better for humanity required great sacrifice from the individual. You may never know rest or happiness, but our calling was meant for something greater, to bring the world something it never thought possible before. Men have always been cheap, our blood writes the books we live in. We have no saving grace, no calmness to our strife. For us to be Men, Champions of our society requires sacrifice, often with our names unknown, but our perseverance to last history. We were born to be sacrificed, our lives cut short by our ambitions. We only find ourselves in the chaos around us, it cements our characters and our legacies. Failing to reach for the glory that is available, whether it be by blood or by wisdom, only dampens the progress the humanity desperately needs. Our blood is iron, our souls are mortal, but the impact we leave is felt by each generation that carries our name and our beliefs. To be man is a curse, a curse to bring about the fate of children. There is no rest, for truth needs a constant vigil, and we have the burning fire in our souls.

One interesting thing is that about 10000-7000 years ago there was a massive loss of males and then a huge jump back up but this didn't happen with females.
