I'd say the straw that broke the camels' back was the "gamers are dead" articles. The whole Quinspiracy thing was just Internet drama that 99% of gamers didn't know or give a shit about even if they did.
They just had to kick the hornets nest- a group of the most tenacious, stubborn, autistic mostly-youths who have ample free time. Couldn't have picked a worse target.
Since they knew nothing about gamers as an identity, they also tried to whitewash one of the most diverse and accepting communities as straight, white, male bigots #NotYourShield. Literally the only obstacle to being a gamer is and was: Do you like video games?
They attacked the identity of this diverse group of the most stubborn and tenacious people you can find on the Internet by calling them -ist/phobic and were surprised when they said NO. Not only that, these brainlets managed to expose their own wrongdoings and give gamers a cause to rally around. In the staring contest of "You suck, go away" their usual social manipulation tactics didn't work and they blinked 1st. It was embarrassing- their 1st total loss, and they've been salty about it ever since.
