"Trying" is a pretty big overstatement since his own party didn't back him on it, and he didn't do anything besides call for it on Twitter. Not like it would have done anything. Delaying things too long would have led to an empty house and a Senate short 34 members and controlled by the Democrats on January 3, then a vacant presidency and vice presidency on January 20, leading to Acting President Patrick Leahy. Which is why the Republicans didn't back him up.
