The tongue is a postural muscle. It is habitually placed on the roof of the mouth and through infancy and youth it supports and creates the shape of the face, ideally producing high cheek bones, a wide dental arch, and strong jaw and chin.
Good tongue posture is learnt from being breastfed and from being raised on firm food that requires chewing. It develops the habits of a closed mouth and nose-breathing.
