All I remember about GamerGate is, it inspired Hotweels to create 8chan. Which I thought was kinda weird, and I thought whatever, I guess it's cool that it created this cool new website. I didn't give a single fuck about GamerGate because I thought game reviews and SJWs were retarded.
But now I guess I gotta know what went down, because it managed to fuck up the entire planet. So can someone give me an explanation of what happened? Obviously Googling it is gonna give me heavily biased information so.....
I was away from gaming for a while, but I had someone in my online social circles (meaning: message board that I frequented at the time) post a "privilege" poll around that time.
I didn't know what "privilege" meant at that time, but it asked who had more privilege. An example being a blind person or one with eye sight. Naturally, I voted for the blind.
Don't know if it was 2013, 2014 or 2015, but the Internet became a complete shit hole after that. Post-Swartz Reddit is crap, this place is disappointing given cross-community pollination, new Voat isn't the same, etc.
I guess I'm better off just playing games. Luckily I have an infinite backlog of PC and console games. Heil emulation.
Post-Swartz Reddit was great, up to about 2015. At least after they found people to do his coding job when he abandoned reddit and took off to Thailand to do drugs. Of course, this was all after his own site failed and he scammed his way into founder status at reddit. What a grifter.
To cap it all off, he skated on paying his debt to society too, even though it was only 3 months...
Comment Reported for: Rule 12: Falsehoods
Comment Approved - This isn't what that rule is for.
Plus, I was on reddit when that all went down, and it was a huge topic on a tiny (at the time) site. Chats and messages from all involved were being posted.
Later, some group came together to make that propaganda movie about him, and large numbers of internet users fell for it. Probably one of them reported my comment. Thanks, btw.
It wasn't me at any rate. You might be right about Swartz and I might be mixing up dates. I came into Reddit late, I just know it became bad shortly thereafter.
