Rowling isn't an amazing writer. She just made a solid enough story that had just enough appeal for teenagers and girls that came out at just the right time (a lull between vampires and then later vampires being popular) to blow up.
So all "metaphors" and applicability are in spite of her, rather than because of her. Which is why even she regularly fails to understand them and why people can see what you see in them.
