Women's tennis gets more viewers than men's tennis, despite the level of play being lower, and that's why the average joe can name the two dozen female tennis players he's masturbated over, but when it comes to men he only only remember's Andre Agassi's mullet.
At its core, sport is supposed to be competition to determine the greatest and best in specific manners. You could only achieve those heights by being paid because otherwise you'd lack the time to reach it with working. Just because its turned into an industry, then a show and entertainment doesn't invalidate that value it had once.
