It's pretty obvious what is happening. A Joke among psych students and majors would be to hand around the DSM and see how many people sort of fit the description. It was laughed at, because of how vague the descriptions could be, and how often someone could be normal, but misdiagnosed.

Then, those same students tried the game with friends, and found all of them suddenly identified with the mental disease.

The trick is most diagnosis means an extreme of a common thing, not the common thing itself. I have a great memory, Autists have a great memory, therefore, I must be autistic. No, I just have a great memory.

Which brings up the other side of the coin. We have a DSM for disorders, and disabilities, but nothing about talents and super abilities. So, Great memory equals Autistic because there is nothing else to use.

Now take all the self identification folks who eventually got tenure, and other such horrors, and we have where we are now. Average guy is now Autistic, and must be trans because he likes the color pink.
