It's so easy for them to brush away grassroots groups under the label of extremist or seditious militia. A regular guy working out of a house to find like minds is an easy target. FBI, ATF, and SWAT raids happen every day, and you only hear about the worst of the worst or what they want you to hear.
"Just another redneck militia plotting something impossible, good thing they're gone, someone would have been hurt. They're too stupid to survive, thinking they could pull that off."
Known faces with big followings rising up is the only insulating way to organize. Attack one group and you incite the whole movement, take out the leader and you make a martyr, take out all at once and you have another Waco. None are good optics for them.
