Sometimes I wonder how prevalent autism and/or down syndrome is going to become in the future. Society tries to pretend these children with severe autism or down syndrome are a blessing, yet how many of these cases do we see where parents kill their special needs children? We parade around these children, even selecting a down syndrome child as a winner of the gerber baby contest, yet observers don't understand the burden of raising a special needs child who will never be able to become independent, who will always have to be cared for by their parents until their parents die.
Most of those who say that it is a blessing to have a down syndrome child, do they really mean it, or are they just saying that because it makes them look virtuous? Will the child really have a good life, or will they be neglected by their parents who deep down have a resentment towards their special needs child who is incapable of functioning on their own?
This is not a justification of this mother, not at all. She should serve jail time for this, she suffocated her son to death and that is abhorrent. I'm just saying how many people are like this woman, who lack the patience to care for this special needs child? Probably a good amount of the people who have special needs children. Is our society so fragile that without the government providing daycare, these parents will go insane?

Most people I know with downs live fulfilling if somewhat truncated lives, whether these are the norm or outliers I don't know
