I think there's a little more to it than that. I think we can safely say in the modern era "unique" is equated with "of value", so what they're really yearning for is to be valued members of society despite the fact that they're currently rather worthless and someone has whispered poison into their ear about how to become valuable.
They want to belong and be worthwhile, but they're trash and they can't accept that because it would mean confronting their own shortcomings and putting in an effort to improve themselves, so they'd rather just sulk and scream at the world.
Kind of weird in Sterling's case though. His positions are heavily contended, sure, but there's no shortage of people willing to lick his ass. You would think being a decently famous youtuber (relative to the industry) would satisfy most people. Like I get it if the person's been groomed their whole life like that Jazz kid or if they're your regular run of the mill lonely faggot, the pathology is pretty easy to follow there, but Jimbo had something pretty large to get validation from.
Maybe it really was just the landwhale making him feel bad for being a white male.
Such a succinct summary of the issue of our age. I don't know how we managed to get here but I desperately want to go back to a sane society.
Take me with you... I miss the 80s... ;~;
The stupidest part is that there's a major source of cognitive dissonance going on here.
The reason why they do all this stupid bullshit is because they like to take on attributes that they think makes them unique.
Unique. Not normal.
But at the same time they're against the idea (truth) that heterosexuality is the norm.
They desperately want to be unique while being regarded as normal.

Yeah that makes sense.
