The rumour (so place what weight on it you will) is that McConnell is doing so to restore the RNC to it's pre-Trump status, and expects to be able to cull Trump loyalists from the RNC after Trump's impeached.

I know he wears glasses but I didn't expect him to be that short-sighted.
