I think it's because, as pretentious as the film scene can be, the foreign film scene tends to take it to the next level; and you have someone that the mainstream has declared to be some sort of anti-semitic white supremacist who none of these people would want to be caught in the same room with; and he's directed/produced two such films to wide release.
I imagine some GigaChad at a foreign film festival telling people "of course I like foreign films: Mel Gibson is my favorite director"
