Covid restrictions have been lucky to limp over the line of Christmas. Public support is cratering, no matter what the polls say, and most politicians have only kept this going because of the optics. In the new year, with multiple vaccines in circulation, you'll see real divisions appear between politicians and "experts." As in, the experts will still scream to lockdown until the end of time while the politicians finally realise "Oh my god, you people are lunatics. Why did we ever listen to you?"
You are very optimistic.
It's observance more than anything else, at least in Britain. Many of our MPs have had their lives disrupted by this as much as the rest of us, and would like a return to normality (but crucially, only if optics allow, which they've almost got). That aside, Boris has no choice but to wrap this up soonish. The existence of the vaccine wipes out the bulk of the doomer cause, the Covid Recovery Group (Tory lobby group) are merrily twisting his cabinet's arm and have already got concessions, and of course there is the ever present threat of Farage. Panic and politicking got us into this mess, and the latter will help get us out.
Hell, fucking Hancock and Gove have come out and said "Easter" as when this farce comes to an end. We'll likely all be in Tier-1 months before then, as the jab brings the death numbers crashing down, which is what even the BBC sees as the most important result of it.
They just extended restrictions, no restaurants open for the rest of the year, in the county that I live in. This is why we just bought a new house near by that is not in this county.
