The idea with "prestigious" awards is that observers feel that the recommendations made are good predictors of value, and trust them. Of course, hiring celebs, expensive looking production values and looking "official" is enough to buy the trust of many.

I pay some heed to these - I am more suspicious of anything that gets nominated.
